The “global superstar," as Spotify’s chief content and chief strategy officer deems him, only continues to dominate the music scene and engage his fans. With his over 2 billion streams this year alone, Drake has also become the most streamed artist on Spotify ever. His album Views was this year’s most-streamed album, with 970 million plays, and was awarded the top spot on digital music service’s annual round up of most streamed.

Behind Drake, artists Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Twenty One Pilots, and Kanye West round out the top 5 of Spotify’s most played artists of the year, with RiRi named the top female artist for the second year in a row. “Work” was streamed over 2.5 billion times.

There is speculation, naturally, of Drake’s win. If past favorites Taylor Swift or The Beatles were licensed to play on Spotify, there would be substantial competition. Though Drake’s prolific work earned him a legacy status that puts him in the musical canon of our generation and years to come.
