Arca Returns with Unsettling New Track "Piel," Announces New Album

"You want gore? Here’s gore."

"You want gore? Here’s gore."

Text: Truman Ports

While the word creepy rarely sounds like a compliment, it is certainly applicable and the highest praise for Venezuelan producer and DJ Alejandro Ghersi, better known by his stage name Arca. The beginning of "Piel," the opening track of his forthcoming self-titled album, begins with him humming for the first 30 seconds, and it is strangely captivating. The rest is Arca singing and cooing in Spanish, marking one of the few times the artist uses his own singing voice on his tracks.

"Here’s my voice and all my guts: feel free to judge it," Arca said about the new album in a press release. "It’s like a bullfight: you’re watching emotional violence for pleasure. So this is a character who, almost as a mockery of the transaction, goes uncomfortably deep, into self-mutilation. ‘You want gore? Here’s gore.’"

A little grim, but that typically makes for interesting art as seen on his 2016 mixtape Entrañas, as well as the dope production he's done on tracks for Kanye West, Bjork, and FKA twigs. So maybe we're all ready for a little more of Arca's gore.

Arca's third studio album, Arca, comes April 7. Check out his new song "Piel" below.
