For the first music video of his third studio album, VMAN36 cover star The Weeknd taps longtime collaborator Grant Singer to direct “Starboy.”

The neo-noir style film offers the first real glimpse of the singer’s new hair. With the track’s release, the single art was noticeably void of his signature dreadlocks. It seemed obvious that they’d been cut, but that couldn’t be confirmed as the singer hadn’t been seen in public sense, which is surprising given his high-profile relationship with model Bella Hadid. The hair is only the first sign of a new era.

The second comes as The Weeknd smashes his past awards with a neon cross reminiscent of a lightsaber, likely a cheeky nod to Star Wars. If these two things aren’t convincing enough, the singer, in the video, quite literally kills his past self. It’s clear from this latest offering that The Weeknd is hell-bent on destroying all that he was known for.

Daft Punk, the producers on “Starboy,” make an appearance as cameos in a painting. There is also a cameo from a black panther, which rides shotgun with The Weeknd in the video's closing sequence. Watch the clip for yourself below, and click here to read The Weeknd's VMAN cover story.
