Behind the glitz and glamour of celebrities is a deeply rooted motivation to give back to the community, and many of them do it quietly and under the radar. Having lots of cash might make it seem like it is easy to give, but giving takes commitment and understanding the world outside oneself. While it is not as publicized as their other exploits, philanthropy is a big part of the celebrity lifestyle.

Rishab Bhatt is a successful entrepreneur, web, iOS, and software developer who is also heavily involved in the global water crisis through his charity organization. “I genuinely feel that with great success comes great responsibility,” says Bhatt. “It’s about giving back to a world that has given so much to us.” Bhatt discusses five celebrities known for their staggering philanthropy who have inspired him to give back.

Jami Gertz

Famous for cult classics like Sixteen Candles, The Lost Boys, and Less than Zero, Jami Gertz supports education, healthcare, Jewish causes, and the Arts through the Gertz-Ressler foundation she founded alongside her husband, Anthony Ressler. “Jami tops the list of charitable celebrities with her overall donations exceeding USD 10 million,” states Bhatt. “She embodies everything possible when two powerful and wealthy people combine forces for the greater good.”

Matthew McConaughey

Actor and professor at the University of Texas, Matthew McConaughey has given back tremendously to schools in central Texas and Los Angeles. “Matthew McConaughey is the son of a substitute teacher, and education is something he has always held dear,” says Bhatt. “As his celebrity rose, he didn’t forget about his roots, and he gave back in ways that other people could have the same opportunities as him.” Through his foundation, Just Keep Livin’, McConaughey has donated over USD 1.5 million.

Larry the Cable Guy

Famous for his Blue Collar Comedy Tour, Dan Whitney, known as Larry the Cable Guy, has raised over USD 6 million for families down on their luck through the Git-R-Done Foundation. “Dan Whitney is funny and rough around the edges, but down to his core, he is extremely generous,” explains Bhatt. “Named after his famous catchphrase, his foundation has put his money where his mouth is by helping countless families.”

Marlo Thomas

A spokesperson for St. Jude’s Research Hospital, Marlo Thomas has carried on her father’s legacy of helping the renowned hospital, helping kids fighting cancer. Thomas’ work raises over USD 1 million per year for the hospital, and her dedication is unmatched. “Marlo Thomas has championed a particular cause longer than any actress out there, and her work is commendable,” explains Bhatt.

Sam Simon

Perhaps not a household name for many but his groundbreaking television series The Simpsons is. Sam Simon is one of the wealthiest TV-creators out there and has given over USD 1.8 million through his foundation, which pairs hard of hearing individuals with service dogs. “Sam Simon is dedicated to something very unique,” states Bhatt, “ensuring that the hard of hearing community isn’t overlooked.” Also, supporting veterans and mobile veterinary units, Simon’s work is indispensable.

You don’t need to have millions to give back. Every little bit helps, and may these five celebrities inspire us to get involved with causes we are passionate about.
