Ellar Coltrane

Born August 27, 1994, in Austin, Texas

When did you realize you wanted to become an actor?

I've always enjoyed acting, since theater classes when I was five. But the way Boyhood has touched people has inspired me to keep going.

What was your first acting job?

Lone Star State of Mind.

What is the toughest job you've had?

Promoting Boyhood.

What do you do besides act?

Draw, paint, swim, hike, garden, read, write.

What would you consider your greatest career achievement thus far?

Learning to collaborate with my costars in Boyhood.

Who is the greatest actor who ever lived and why?

I don't really think there is one. Philip Seymour Hoffman was able to capture a pretty vulnerable part of masculinity and Marlon Brando did something similar for a different generation. But I think almost every actor is important in his own way.

Have you wrestled with temptation?

I certainly see it, but I'm not really attracted to money and drugs and stuff...

Are you single?

I don't think that matters.

What's your favorite urban legend?

Slender Man.

Is there a style icon who inspires you?

Mike Patton.

Theater, TV, or movies?

All three.

What has been the most surprising element of working as an actor?

Realizing how therapeutic an exploration of yourself acting can be.

What is your endgame?

To express.

Ellar Coltrane appears as Mason in the critically worshipped Richard Linklater film Boyhood, available on DVD now
