adidas Originals and WALES BONNER Launch Autumn/Winter 2021 Collaborative Collection

The British label and sportswear giant team up for ‘Black Sunlight.’

British label Wales Bonner and adidas Originals have reunited for a powerful Autumn/Winter 2021 collection titled ‘Black Sunlight.’ Having first collaborated last year, the pair’s newest foray is a thoughtful exploration of ready to wear with tinges of sportswear strewn throughout.

Featuring t-shirts, outerwear, tracksuits, and updated footwear silhouettes, the range embodies Wales Bonner’s focus on intellectual separates and paying homage to the work of Black creatives and thinkers. Continuing creative director Grace Wales Bonner’s thoughtful sartorial interplay, collegiate motifs and muted hues aim to highlight Black British intellectualism — particularly the work of poets and artists from the Caribbean, India, and West Africa.

Developing themes explored in previous collections, ’80s-inspired silhouettes are reflective of Wales Bonner’s attempt to illuminate postcolonial discourse and the work of a handful of Diasporic thinkers. And with romantic imagery from photographer Tyler Mitchell, the accompanying campaign evokes connotations of freedom, intimacy, and brotherhood through the lens of Summer-time nostalgia.

Not only focusing on illuminating a bevy of radical thought makers, the collection also features updates to the adidas Japan silhouette. With utilitarian notions like plush leather, suede detailing, and moccasin border stitching, the collection’s sneakers are a much-appreciated updated to prior silhouettes. Zooming in on the collection’s ready to wear, tracksuits, t-shirts, and jumpers are elevated with collegiate graphics and sprawling motifs — an attempt to represent academic and spiritual growth.

The adidas Originals by Wales Bonner Autumn/Winter 2021 collection is available globally at adidas.com and through select retailers. Footwear will launch beginning of 2022.
