Adidas X Allbirds Will Design the World’s Lowest Carbon Footprint Sports Sneaker

Footwear brands join forces in the name of sustainability.

Adidas is teaming up with New Zealand-American footwear company, Allbirds to design a sports shoe with the world’s lowest carbon footprint.

The sportswear giant chose Allbirds for their direct-to-consumer approach and sustainability innovations. Together, they want to design a shoe that has a carbon footprint of 2 kg compared to the average 12.5 kg of other sneakers on the market. The project came out of a desire to create a tangible product that could prove that the sportswear industry can create an environmentally responsible product that still worked for athletes, the brands told BoF

Earlier this year,  Adidas pledged to reduce its carbon footprint by 30 percent by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2050 and  to use only recyclable polyester in all its products by 2024. The brands will oversee every step of the supply chain—from manufacturing to distribution. They will then use their life cycle assessment tool and carbon footprint tools.

“Our brands don’t want to just participate in the sustainability conversation, we want to continue being catalysts and creators of substantial improvement. The recent progress that our brands have made in the name of sustainable innovation has created the perfect momentum for this partnership to influence industry practices forever,” Carnes stated after launching project.

The project is said to have a 1-year timeline. Even amid this pandemic, brands will continue working remotely. For now there is no release date. So keep an eye out for this innovative sneaker.
