Yesterday, A$AP Rocky took over the Sotheby’s headquarters in New York with an original performance piece entitled Lab Rat. Blending art, commerce, crash test dummies and everything in between, the piece also served as the launch of a sneaker collaboration between Under Armour and Rocky, who pulled the chunky-soled shoe from a yellow hazmat bag while inside a glass cube as a crowd of spectators looked on.

The vivid, 90-minute production saw Rocky enacting a range of dystopian-esque choreography, from diving fully clothed in a black suit into a tub of water to being fed milk by a lab-coated female attendant in firefighter gear—both supplied by Calvin Klein.

The performance, which was live-streamed on YouTube, followed another recent video collaboration between Sotheby’s and Rocky. Last week, the rapper joined exiled artist Ai Wei Wei in a video for the Fearless Now campaign, drumming up buzz for the storied auction house’s contemporary art sales. That intersection of art and hip-hop may have been a lucky omen for the auction house; later that week, Sotheby’s fetched the highest price tag ever for a work by a living black artist—a Kerry James Marshall painting purchased by none other than P. Diddy.

Yesterday’s event—attended by Harlem couturier Dapper Dan and various members of A$AP Mob—is sure to build buzz surrounding Rocky’s highly anticipated album Testing set to drop this Friday, May 25. See more of the visionary event below.
