Three years after Morning Phase, Beck is finally ready to announce his 13th album and follow-up: Colors, out this October. In a tell-all interview with Rolling Stone, who described the upcoming record as "a euphoric blast of experimental pop," Beck admitted he wants to produce work that inspires and cultivates happiness in people.

Produced by Greg Kurstin, who frequently works with Adele, Sia, and Kelly Clarkson, the record has been in the works since 2013 and was ready for release last year, but Beck wasn't yet satisfied—"These are complex songs all trying to do two or three things at once. It's not retro and it's not modern. To get everything to sit together so it doesn't sound like a huge mess was quite an undertaking."

Beck has always been an experimentalist; after 12 previous albums, however, it's difficult to find an untapped venue. Happiness, perhaps, is the last remaining. "The best songs make you happy to be alive," he said. "It doesn't matter if it's Beethoven or the Monkees. That's what I was thinking about a lot."

But as is tradition for Beck, he's never one to follow a trend: "I've always been doing my thing, I feel like more and more I have a sort of open passport where I just go in and out, away from the eye of the hurricane. It's interesting."
