Black Owned Brands You Need to Know

Here is V’s pick of five Black owned brands you need to know.

Just several weeks ago, the protests following the recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Tony McDade have erupted across the country and the world — and many people were quick to support the movement both online and IRL. Now that the widespread enthusiasm started to die down, there is no better time to show Black entrepreneurs some love, considering the fact that they are still largely underrepresented across industries. Fortunately, there is something all of us can do every day to help alleviate the issue and support those businesses during these difficult times: a very simple act of shopping from them.

Here, we have rounded up for you five Black-owned brands every fashion fanatic has to know and support in 2020. From the democratic and unisex Telfar to the edgy and chic Romeo Hunte — check out our selects below:

1 — Phelmuns

At the intersection of feminine and masculine-wear comes Phelmuns — a fashion brand that wants to end environmentally harmful fast fashion practices and make clothes consumers hold onto forever. Founded by James Flemon, this fashion brand uses recycled products to deliver contemplative and dynamic designs.

2 — Fear of God

Jerry Lorenzo founded Fear of God back in 2013 inspired by his tumultuous religious upbringings. Clothes in Lorenzo’s collection take after the few secular references Lorenzo was exposed to as a child. Among these pop culture references are figures from The Breakfast Club and rebellious icons like Kurt Cobain and Allen Iverson.

3 — Romeo Hunte

Brooklyn born Designer Romeo Hunte grew up around creative women that inspired him to enter into the fashion field. This edgy, intricate, sophisticated and chic brand designs clothes for both dynamic men and women. Keeping with his roots, Hunte’s designs are inspired by pop culture and art located in and around New York City.

4 — A-Cold-Wall

Founded in 2016 by Samuel Ross, former protege of Virgil Abloh, A-Cold-Wall is all about turning the ordinary into the spectactacular. Ross’ brand is inspired by both material items, like metal and mechanical parts, but also by the philosophy of “visual language.”

5 — Telfar

“It’s not for you — it’s for everyone,” is designer Telfar Clemens’ mantra. This unisex line is more than a fashion brand. Clemens has built Telfar into a leading designer brand by maintaining a consistent democratic approach to clothing. In his early designer years, Clemens donated profits from his clothing brand to bail money for minors on Rikers Island.
