Blood Orange Goes Classical with ‘Fields’

Devonté Hynes ventured out into the classical music composition world, teaming up with the Chicago-based Third Coast Percussion.

The new album by alt-pop polymath Dev Hynes, better known as Blood Orange, has finally arrived. Teaming up with a Grammy-winning quartet under the name of Third Coast Percussion, the artist rolled out a spellbinding project titled Fields.

Hynes is known for his previous collaborations with artists and musicians such as Solange Knowles, FKA twigs and Mariah Carey. This time, the genre-bending songster decided to try himself in classical music composition—composing all music in a Digital Audio Workstation and then sending the recordings and sheet music to the members of Third Coast Percussion who arranged and orchestrated them for their own instruments. The result is an album of 13 lush tunes, starting with an 11-track suite “For All Its Fury” followed by songs “Perfectly Voiceless” and “There Was Nothing.” All ambient, luxury, plush.

“This was the first time I’ve written music that I’ve never played, and I love that,” Dev Hynes shared. “It’s something I’ve always been striving to get to. Seeing what Third Coast Percussion had done with these pieces was magical.”

As per usual for Dev, the project worked out to be magically mesmerizing. Earlier this year, the musician has also released Angel’s Pulse, a mixtape dubbed an  ‘epilogue’ to his famous Negro Swan.
