Burberry Echoes the Animal Kingdom With Fall/Winter ’21 Menswear Collection

In a digital presentation, Burberry reflects on the links between man and nature, dreaming of escape.

In a cool neutral setting punctuated by sophisticated hues and fine tailoring, Burberry has debuted their Autumn/Winter 2021 menswear collection, “Escapes.” A reinvention of tradition and a gentle triumph of expression, the iconic British fashion house presents a cohesive range that is young, vibrant, alive.

The first Burberry menswear collection by Chief Creative Officer Riccardo Tisci, “Escapes” is a celebration of creation and the expansive beauty of menswear, highlighted by the enclosed, indoor setting.

“I became fascinated by the widespread British craft and outdoor movements of the early 20th century, when people escaped to explore the unknown countryside,” said Tisci. “They formed communities with a deep respect for nature and the outdoors and looked forward to a full future of possibility. I was not only drawn to the artistry of their craft, colors and shapes, but also to their strong sense of camaraderie and friendship.”

Burberry’s excellence in sleek, contemporary sophistication and elevated men’s looks is juxtaposed with modern craftsmanship and tailoring with “Escapes,” woven into every garment. The livestreamed runway saw models debuting the clothing in a warm-toned, creamy beige room adorned by rippling curtains, sweet, youthful instrumentals by Peter Gregson harping in the background—a serene, composed atmosphere, made all the more ethereal with the elegance of Burberry.

Punctuated by chic and bold looks dipped in a color palette of warm-toned neutrals and complementary shades of burgundy and periwinkle, the presentation was a celebration of timelessness, a meeting place where tradition and innovation go hand in hand. Outerwear plays a key role, with garments tailored and engineered to be lived in, designed for movement and freedom. Pleats, panels and fringes adhere to Burberry’s history of tailoring genius, while the quintessential Burberry beige and iconic trench coat remain ubiquitous throughout, evolved for the new season.

True to its name, the collection is, indeed, an escape. It is freshness withdrawn from expectation, subverting the traditional urban uniform in favor of something more adaptable, more akin to the natural world. The iconic Burberry trench coat is merged with the Harrington jacket, while bulky car coats with exaggerated silhouettes are cinched at the waist with scarf belts. Duffle coats are updated and reconstructed, while knits and outerwear exchange motifs—a trench coat possesses the V-neck of a sweater, while a jumper is adorned with a double-breasted panel.

Standout pieces reflect the inspiration drawn from the animal kingdom converged with the composed, modern tailoring of the House itself. A fox-fur shirt, a pleated skirt, ceremonial silk crepe de chine vests and hooded duffle coats—these are the theses for Burberry presented by Tisci, the vision for a future built on the pillars erected between man and animal.

Accessories in the collection draw their inspiration from the natural world, paying homage to elements and animals. A deer motif weaves across the exaggerated silhouette of knit beanies and the print of cashmere scarves, while bags are reimagined to be structured for the outdoors—a supersized messenger made for hiking, a leather bum bag and backpack with blanket straps for wandering, exploring, discovering. Shoes are molded to the soles, constructed of supple leather with crystal and metallic embellishments, masculinity intersecting with a more delicate, graceful spirit.

“This collection is an homage to the relationship between humanity and nature, where we can break free and come together to discover new forms of expression,” said Tisci. “It’s for those who are defining their own path, whose strength and energy have inspired this Burberry collection.”
