“Oh, it’s scary,” says Owen Teague. “It’s very disturbing, it’s great. It’s also really funny. But it’s scary.” Perhaps the “its” in that description should be capitalized: Teague is talking about It, the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s evil clown novel, hitting theaters in September. Teague plays Patrick Hockstetter, the disturbed teenager in the bullying Bowers Gang. Despite the ghastly nature of the film, Teague describes the cast (Stranger Things’s Finn Wolfhard among them) as full of youthful energy. “Those kids are all wonderful people,” the 18-year-old actor says. “And I think it shows up on screen between them, that kind of crazy camaraderie.”

Though Hockstetter is Teague’s first truly malevolent role, he is used to being on dark shows, having earned rave reviews for his role as troubled teen Nolan Rayburn on the Netflix show Bloodline. Before It opens and the press junkets begin, Teague is going to spend the summer in London attending a Shakespeare workshop, where he will hone his skills. “I’ve always loved being other people, stepping into other people’s heads and bodies and seeing what makes them go and how they work,” he says. “But really, it’s just fun.”
