Celebrating Earth Day with the “Re-Burberry” Edit

The British luxury fashion house launches the new collection of sustainable SS20 pieces.

In an effort to move towards more environmentally friendly practices, many luxury fashion brands have been improving their practices by using more sustainable materials. What better time to launch than Earth Day 2020? This is not the first time Burberry has made an effort to use sustainable and recycled fabrics. The brand has used Econyl in the past, a material made from recycled nylon and other fabrics, on products like their Bambi inspired puffer.

They took to Instagram this morning to announce the launch, citing the new collection as “a curation of pieces from the Spring/Summer 2020 collection, created from fabrics of the future.” The few outerwear pieces shown were debuted in a beautiful array of moving editorial shots featuring scenes from nature as well as a windmill, which to many is the symbol of sustainability.

ReBurberry is also made using Econyl, a combination of recycled materials including fishing nets and industrial plastics, as well as a “pioneering-based acetate.” While outerwear seems to be the focus, unsurprisingly due to the use of nylons, the collection is made up of menswear, womenswear, and accessories including eyewear and bags.

On top of the collection, Burberry has also created a new global standard for their product labeling. The labels, while sustainable themselves, will show customers the positive attributes their product will carry and the detailed sustainable criteria met by the brand. This criteria includes recycled products, carbon emission standards, and ethical practices and fair treatment of workers.
