Celine Homme Evokes New Romanticism With Teen Knight Poem

In a wave of reinvention, Celine’s new collection spans the French Renaissance to the alternative cultures of the ’90s.

Youth reinvents itself with “Teen Knight Poem,” part of the Autumn/Winter collection, by Celine Homme, an amorphous, shifting thing, a reimagining of the adolescent image under the sphere of new romanticism.

Filmed at the Château de Chambord, the show is a visually stunning conglomeration of the reemergence of youth as spirits are reborn and reinvented, identities armored with sleek, clean silhouettes recalling a land of squires and chivalry, a place where leather jackets and bombers supercede chainmail and metal.

Directed and styled by Hedi Slimane, the show is a juxtaposition of modern youth against a vividly nostalgic backdrop. Models wander the towering spires of the Chateau to the beat of energetic, vibrant music by The Loom, portraying proportions evoking the French Renaissance and embellishments and accents reminiscent of the ‘90s and goth subculture.

Simple yet boldly effective, the color palette of the collection is largely black and white with an undercurrent of denim, a stark tonal statement that is seamlessly fluid through designs spanning multiple centuries. The collection plays with shape and design—stone and crystal embellishments dot overcoats and slope-shouldered bombers, while corsets are studded with chainmail, Parisian couture fit for the modern urban royalty.

Embroidery is threaded in shades of black and tan, gold and silver, recalling Renaissance-era court and ceremonial dresses. Accessories are valorous, eye-catching: a thick silver chain, dangling dagger earrings, a houndstooth black and white scarf.

Standout pieces in the collection transverse time, making a bridge between past and present, a canal for rebirth; a chic black overcoat detailed with houndstooth lapels; a multicolor leather jacket recalling ‘90s youth; am all-silver, chromatic puffer; and, most notably, the final look of the show, an embroidered garment realized by 23 embroiderers and 1300 hours of work.
