City Guide: Belgrade, Serbia

A small city of resilience lensed by Danilo Pavlovic.

In our City Guide series, VMAN asks photographers from around the globe to feature their city as they know it best. This rendition lensed by Danilo Pavlovic takes us to notable sites from the specific era – of economic expansion and brutalist architecture standing with resiliency in Belgrade, Serbia.

“The locations I chose represent the strength and power of Belgrade, considering that our city has been destroyed [amid World War II] and rebuilt several times throughout history,” says Pavlovic. “Through these significant symbols of Belgrade, I wanted to portray different cultural and historic momentums we have been through, as a country but also as people.”

Of course, adhering to social distancing guidelines, the noteworthy photographer made a point to capture the inspiration of Eastern European esthetics with a sprinkle of Belgrade flair. “It is raw, dark, simplistic but at the same time powerful, passionate, and moving,” he says. With stark contrast, articulate yet somewhat sharpened shapes with the mix of personal intimacy, he explains that “Belgrade is the city that is never stagnant, there is always a new emotion to discover in yourself and in others.” Especially… amplifying passion. “The main emotion in this shoot is the contrast and connection between the rawness and brutalism of Belgrade [mixed with] gentle, sensitive emotion.”

Rich with history, this city that dates back to 7000 B.C.  cultures and civilizations have clashed there over the course of time. VMAN’s own Photo and Bookings Director, Goran Macura a Belgrade-born citizen, notes that although it’s rough history and its meaning remains steadfast, the city remains determined to evolve underlining its community. “Belgrade has a juxtaposition between the ancient and the new, modern. I love that it lies between two rivers, for me, they are the source of serenity and also the epicenter of nightlife during the summer.” He continues, “There are many floating restaurants and night clubs. I love the energy of the city, it’s very vibrant. Belgrade has incredible food, great hospitality, superb nightlife, and beautiful people. And what I love the most about it, is the way that it makes me feel – carefree.”
