Cody was here in NYC for a few days for Good Morning America," photographer Carlos Santolalla tells us, showing VMAN these intimate images of the singer, "and to promote his upcoming album that he's self-releasing in July. A mutual friend of ours asked me to come shoot him at his hotel in SoHo the night prior to his performance."

Santolalla expected a tame evening of press pass-access reportage. "At first it was just [Simpson] on his bed with a few of his guitars, but then I asked if he was okay to leave the room," he continues. "He was down to walk around the hotel and outside in the rain to get some good shots. He's kind of a superstar, so it was cool to see him be so down with whatever. I shoot film and had a limited amount of photos I could take, and I ended up using my last roll of film before we were done. So, he handed me one from his room.

"Neither of us knew that he had fully used the roll during his European tour. Shooting the same roll twice produces overlapping images called double exposures, and weirdly enough the twice-exposed photos of his typical Australian beach style and my grungy New York blended incredibly well. It actually made some beautiful photographs that matched both our aesthetics perfectly―a serendipitous collaboration somewhere between punk and pop."
