“Dexter” Will Be Coming Back as a Limited Series

The hit show returns as a limited series on Showtime in 2021.

Everyone’s favorite sexy serial killer is coming out of retirement in 2021. Showtime announced that they would be reviving hit TV show Dexter as a limited series. Michael C. Hall will be returning to reprise his role as the title character, with the series’ original showrunner, Clyde Phillips, helming the project.

“Dexter is such a special series, both for its millions of fans and for Showtime, as this breakthrough show helped put our network on the map many years ago,” said Showtime Entertainment president Gary Levine in a statement. “We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series. Well, I am happy to report that Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall have found it, and we can’t wait to shoot it and show it to the world.”

Dexter originally ran on Showtime for eight seasons, ending in 2013. While the show was highly successful during its run, the series finale was extremely negatively received, ending with Dexter Morgan faking his death and retiring as a lumberjack.

Series production is set to begin in the winter and will see the light of day during the Fall 2021 season. Talks of the show being revived as a way of redeeming the series finale have been making the rounds for years, with then-Showtime head David Nivens stating in 2014 that they would only do it if there was a new take on it and if Hall was a part of the project.
