Dior Takes a Trip Back in Time for their Spring 2022 Men’s Collection

Kim Jones is using the past of the Dior Maison to uplift the present

The concept of the evolution of fashion often involves innovation and creativity that breaks boundaries, the kind that borrows from elements from other fields entirely, introducing concepts and identities that are completely new to this world. But more recently, houses have taken to paying homage to their illustrious pasts, using that glory to amplify the voices of the newer generation of couture.

Dior artistic director Kim Jones takes the same path, reimagining the beginnings of the Maison from the current lens for the Dior Men’s Spring 2022 line. The look of a vintage, sepia-toned nostalgia is evident throughout the color scheme of the collection, a muted cascade of Dior gray and pink, earth tones, sandstone, and off-whites.

The real bursts of personality and history come through in the use of patterns and tailoring. The leopard print motifs are symbolic of the ones used in the debut Dior collections from when the House first launched in 1947. The floral prints represent Christian Dior’s love for gardens and the outdoors, while some of the more stylized use of logos and “CD” embossing come inspired by the designs of legendary House of Dior designer Marc Bohan’s work in the 60s.

Jones adds his own influence to the collection, having been at the helm of revitalizing the meld of sports and formal wear, by bringing immaculate tailoring to more casual fits. Shearling bomber jackets, belted waists, crossbody bags, leather moccasins, Dior B30 sneakers, all contribute to a relaxed appeal for outfits clearly steeped in more couture and formal make.
