Director Matthew Cherry Signs With Warner Bros. TV

The ‘Hair Love’ director is set to develop a variety of new content.

Hair Love, the 2019 short film directed by Matthew A. Cherry, became an instant classic. Featuring the voice of Issa Rae, the film managed to counter stereotypes of Black fatherhood in six short minutes, becoming an important component of a changing conversation. Cherry hopes to continue that conversation in future projects, which he’ll work in in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television.

“I am beyond excited to be joining the Warner Bros. Television family in this exciting new capacity,” Cherry told the Hollywood Reporter. “It’s an important time to be a Black creative working in this industry, and I look forward to creating impactful projects and partnering with other talented marginalized voices in our community.”

The deal allows Cherry to produce multiple projects for streaming services such as WarnerMedia’s HBO Max, in association with his company Cherry Lane Productions. Certainly, Cherry will continue to use his platform to speak out for causes nearest to him, as he has in the past.

With reference to the outspoken John Boyega of the Star Wars franchise, Cherry says “As Black creatives, you want to work, you want to continue to use your instrument to make the world a better place and put out great depictions of people that look like you, but a lot of times when you want to speak your mind, there’s always a question: Am I going to get blackballed for this?”

He continues, “I wanted people to speak up and say they got his back.” Hopefully, Cherry’s partnership with Warner Bros. is one small component of larger industry changes, direly needed. For making anti-racist statements should be not only tolerable, but necessary.
