Earth, Wind & Fire and The Isley Brothers to Battle on ‘VERZUZ’

The coolest imaginable battle of the bands will stream live on April 4.

The webcast series VERZUZ, a project of Timbaland and Swizz Beatz, debuted at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic as a way for fans to keep up with and root for their favorite artists. The series streams on Instagram and on the Triller app – the founders recently became members of the Triller management team with Triller’s purchase of their popular webcast. VERZUZ pairs up big names for a bit of musical competition. Previous episodes have featured battles between rappers Ludacris and Nelly as well as singers Erykah Badu and Jill Scott. On Easter Sunday, the series will pivot from its usual hip-hop focus to feature iconic bands Earth, Wind, & Wire and The Isley Brothers.

VERZUZ recently celebrated its one-year anniversary, which is a reminder of how far we’ve all come since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The fate of live music remains uncertain but is starting to look more hopeful. Still, there are elements of the webcast format that might be valuable in a post-pandemic future. For one thing, watching is free. Webcasts also allow for collaboration and, in the case of VERZUZ, competition between artists who don’t share the same physical space.

Along with the upcoming battle between Earth, Wind, & Fire and The Isley Brothers, VERZUZ  announced an episode (the “How High” 4/20 special) with rappers Redman and Method Man. Announcements for future episodes are in the works.
