Since 1970, Elton John has been touring the world. Recently, the 70-year-old announced his three-year farewell tour with 300 dates. Before the 60th Grammys, the five-time Grammy winner commented on the Farewell Yellow Brick Road: The Final Tour, which begins in September. "We've been talking this for two and a half years," he said. "A farewell announcement, and now it's done, I feel as if I've shed a skin. I'm just looking forward to the three-year tour and saying goodbye to all my fans around the world. It feels damn good."

Since that first world tour in 1970, he has been dazzling audiences worldwide and influencing the masses, not only with his music, but his over-the-top stage costumes. The first time he met Sting, he was dressed on stage as Minnie Mouse. As if being Sir Elton John wasn't enough, he was also Captain Fantastic. Whether he's clad in feathers, sequins, oversized bedazzled glasses or personifying a new alter-ego, nobody has done it quite like The Rocket Man. Perhaps the best depiction was when John played the last Wham! concert dressed as Ronald McDonald.

With the pop-rock icon's farewell announcement in hand, V is looking back at some of the most defining costumes he has brought to the stage and, in turn, to culture at large. Click through below to see his best onstage looks.
