Tailored, Euro-tinged menswear may form the foundation of the BOSS empire, but with their SS19 collection, the German luxury house proved it is open to tinkering with the formula. Held in a softly lit hangar on Manhattan's southern seaport, the collection rolled men's and womenswear into one range dubbed “California Breeze.” While both lines adhered to the Californian theme, the beachy color codes and relaxed tailoring felt particularly refreshing among the menswear; if his predecessors took power lunches, the new, enlightened BOSS man goes on spiritual retreats and wears a rose quartz-hued suit.

With its cape-like trenches, bucket bags and open-toed shoes, BOSS's dual collection reflected the same appetite for levity that trended at men's fashion week, as seen in Kim Jones’s jewelry-studded Dior Homme debut to Prada’s puffy hats and short-shorts. Its SS19 showcase may have been yet another example of menswear hitting its stride, but on this rainy fashion week Sunday, BOSS's springy California dream was especially welcome.
