Things were just starting to heat up on the set of Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina when filmmaker and photographer Christian Coppola arrived there to meet his friend, the actress and star of the show Kiernan Shipka. Armed with a camera, Coppola soon fell into the role of documentarian, trailing a beaming Shipka as she navigated her first starring role, or roaming the faux-town of Greendale, capturing the ruin-like quality of a Hollywood set between takes.

A burgeoning auteur who splits his time between New York and L.A., Coppola is no stranger to film sets (while distantly related to the Coppola dynasty, the Dallas native owes his craft more to his time in film school than his last name: "I was not onset for Godfather III or anything"). But with influences like Xavier Dolan, Coppola seems to be more interested in psychology than the supernatural; his forthcoming short film Daddy, which stars former NYU classmate Dylan Sprouse, follows an 80-year-old man who invites a high-class male escort (Sprouse) to the Plaza as a stand-in for his late wife. But, raised in a household of semi-lapsed Catholics, Coppola nurses a fascination with the occult: “I love Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist; When I originally spoke to Kiernan about the show, that’s [what she compared it to],” he says of what drew him to the Sabrina set.

His taste for the uncanny comes through in the photos, which show Shipka (whom Coppola met at a dinner in Los Angeles) and other cheery cast-members (Jaz Sinclair, Ross Lynch) posing alongside spooky BTS remnants like a blood-soaked walls and dusky cornfields. Flick through the spellbinding photos below.
