Exploration and Discovery for Junya Watanabe Man Spring-Summer 2022 Collection

Using photographs from Bhutan as a starting point, Watanabe’s fearless innovation takes the form of bold prints and vibrant colors.

Junya Watanabe Man launched its Spring-Summer 2022 collection, title “No Theme”. Inspired by a series of photographs by James Hawkesworth from his travels to Bhutan, this collection is centered on the sense of discovery evoked only through exploration.

“It’s such an incredible feeling turning up to a place with no ideas or expectations, and just walking and exploring and taking photographs – it’s incredible what you find,” said Hawkesworth of the images. Watanabe captures these sentiments of wonder and boldness through this collection.

With illustrations and artworks sourced from a diverse array of international artists, the vibrant and dynamic prints found on the garments are a taste of what one would encounter when travelling East. Including airy and flowing pieces, straw hats and a litany of patterns and designs.

Brand collaborations include a jacket with The North Face, Levi’s and Dickies sarouel pants and New Balance original sneakers based on the 574 model, among several others. Functional and simple looks featuring practical footwear and loose-fitting pieces further develop the idea of travel, where comfort and style often merge.

Prints applied to vintage items from Berberjin add a unique flair to the collection, reminiscent of what one could find at an artisanal market. These patterns and designs capture the sense of discovery and newness of travel.

A blazer in collaboration with Brooks Brothers brings a slightly sophisticated, put-together air to the more casual collection. Paired with a straw hat and clashing patterns, this look highlights Watanabe’s fearless innovation.
