‘F9’ to Screen at Cannes Film Festival

The latest movie in the “Fast & Furious” series arrives in U.S. theaters in June.

F9, the latest addition to the Fast & Furious movie series, will get a special Cannes Film Festival screening, Variety reports. Cannes chief Thierry Fremaux had previously teased to the publication that a “planetary blockbuster” would premiere at this year’s edition and looks like the Vin Diesel-led flick took the slot.

Directed by Justin Lin, the movie follows up on the events of The Fate of the Furious, with Dom Toretto (Diesel) “leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and his son, little Brian” – that is, until a threat forces him to face his past so he can protect his loved ones. With the help of his friends, he must stop a dangerous plan led by the highly skilled assassin and driver Jakob (John Cena), who is also Dom’s estranged brother.

It is estimated that the film has already grossed over $250 million worldwide, including $203 million in China. The Cannes premiere is set to happen at a beachfront public screening with the presence of delegates, but the cast – which also includes Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster, Charlize Theron, Ludacris, and Helen Mirren – is not expected to attend. The movie will open in French theaters on July 14 and in the U.S. on June 25.

Other U.S. films that will have their world premieres in Official Selection at Cannes include Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, Tom McCarthy’s Stillwater, Sean Penn’s Flag Day, and Sean Baker’s Red Rocket. The festival will celebrate Jodie Foster with an honorary Palme d’Or at the opening night ceremony and Spike Lee will preside over the competition jury.

The 2021 Cannes Film Festival is set to take place on July 6-17.
