Ten years in the making, “Father Soldier Son” arrives on Netflix today to tell a harrowing story about a United States veteran and his family. 

The documentary, a collaboration by The New York Times and Netflix, follows third generation soldier Brian Eisch and his two sons Isaac and Joey as they endure the impacts of a family rooted in military tradition. Returning from Afghanistan with only one leg, Eisch enlists in a new journey towards self-determination.

Directed by journalists Catrin Einhorn and Leslye Davis, “Father Soldier Son” is not only a portrait of the American family, but a story documenting generational tragedy. Following Eisch, Einhorn and Davis capture the challenges of American masculinity and turmoil of many father-son relationships.

The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. Nominated for Best Documentary Feature and winning Best Editing, “Father Soldier Son” received enormous praise by film critics and audiences alike. 

Einhorn and Davis are both veteran journalists having worked at The Times for close to a decade. Davis started working at The Times in 2012 as a documentarian and photographer. Einhorn has been reporting and producing a variety of media at The New York Times for years.

Over the past few years, The Times has slowly been inching towards more visual based content. In 2019, The Times launched “The Weekly” on FX and Hulu — a documentary program visually exploring written reporting by The Times.

“Father Soldier Son” is now available to watch on Netflix.
