The beloved 90’s sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, is getting a dramatic reboot and Will Smith will be an executive producer. 

The series ran on NBC for 6 seasons from 1990 through 1996. It starred James Avery, Janet Hubert, Alfonso Ribeiro, Karyn Parsons, Tatyana M. Ali, Joseph Marcell, Daphne Maxwell Reid, and Ross Bagley.

According to Variety, the new adaptation will be based on Morgan Cooper’s viral video that reimagined the series as a drama titled Bel-Air. The trailer was shared online last year, and now has over five million views on YouTube. The project has not yet found a home, but multiple outlets like HBO Max are being offered to. 

Cooper is said to co-write and direct the project and will also serve as a co-executive producer. Chris Collins will serve as showrunner and executive producer in addition to co-writing the script with Cooper. Smith, as mentioned, will executive produce via Westbrook Studios along with Quincy Jones, Benny Medina, and original series creators Andy and Susan Borowitz. Miguel Melendez and Westbrook Studios’ Terence Carter will also executive produce. Westbrook Studios and Universal Television will produce. 

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the new Bel-Air has been in the works for more than a year after the four-minute clip went viral when it was posted in March 2019. Check out the trailer below.
