George Floyd’s Brother to Testify Before Congress During Hearing on Police Accountability

Philonise Floyd will make an appearance this Wednesday, June 10.

George Floyd’s brother, Philonise Floyd, will testify before Congress on Wednesday in regards to a House Judiciary Committee hearing on “Policing Practices and Law Enforcement Accountability.”

According to a source from CNN, it has not been determined whether Floyd will speak in-person or virtually about his brother’s death due to social distancing recommendations.

This hearing follows the death of George Floyd, an African American man who was killed after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes. The incident sparked outrage across the nation, as well as protests fighting against police brutality and systemic racism.

“It was George Floyd — Perry Jr. what they called him — who sparked the fuse that’s going to change this nation,” said Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Stackhouse in a eulogy at George Floyd’s memorial service in North Carolina.

Philonise and Terrence Floyd have both publicly addressed racial justice and the issues of police brutality after their brother’s death. Last week, Philonise Floyd also met with President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden, mentioning that his conversation with Trump was “brief” while Biden was talking to him “constantly.”

“The vice president, I loved his conversation. He talked to me for like 10 [or] 15 minutes. And I was trying to talk his ear off because he was talking to me constantly. Great conversation,” Floyd told CNN. “But Trump, it lasted probably two minutes,” he continued.

According to a statement from House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, the hearing will “examine the crisis of racial profiling, police brutality and lost trust between police departments and the communities they serve.
