Today marked a triumph for the Gucci design team. Due to creative director Frida Giannini’s departure in December, the house team was tasked with turning out the brand’s F/W ’15 menswear collection, which proposed an alluring, and notably softer new direction. Alongside masculine staples, like slick trousers, sharp overcoats, and those signature Gucci bit loafers, which were embellished with that looked like fur peeking out of the soles, were romantic ruffled blouses, lace tops,  shirts with bow-neck closures, and a dashing fur-collar poncho. Fall’s Gucci man also seemed decidedly relaxed, what with his pajama-styled suits, loose-fitting earth-toned pants, and fur strap Birkenstock-style sandals (worn with socks, naturally). At the end of the show, the design team came out together to take its much-deserved bow. At the center of this group celebration was Alessandro Michele—Gucci’s head accessories designer, who is rumored to be the top pick for Giannini’s successor. Could this have been a successful audition for the big gig? Maybe so, but at the very least, Gucci’s finale was a touching moment, and a necessary reminder that it’s not just the hyper-visible mega-star designers who make the fashion world tick.
