Heron Preston Is Telling The World That Mistakes Are OK

Embracing life’s flaws and imperfections in his newest range for Levi’s.

In the most difficult and uncertain of times, designers are looking for ways to tell us that imperfections make life more interesting and takes all of our life experiences to the next level. And of all of them, creative multi-hyphenate Heron Preston knows that like no other.

The renowned designer, DJ, consultant, art director and collaborator learned about the importance of embracing one’s mistakes at an early age. In fact, his very life started with one — though born in 1983, someone at the hospital accidentally entered 1873 on his birth certificate. That landmark mistake ended up shaping his entire approach to design, not just accepting mistakes but celebrating them — which now culminates in his new collaborative project with Levi’s.

Coming in as a capsule dubbed “MISTAKES ARE OK,” the range borrows its title from one of Preston’s tattoos honoring the birth certificate mix-up. Each piece in the collection is tweaked and distorted to create a range of intentional mistakes, or “conscious aberrations” as Heron likes to call them. It is a demonstration of why mistakes should be embraced for how they make things cool and interesting instead of being deemed as something ‘bad’ and inherently ‘faulty.’ With details like internal parts of pockets facing outward, asymmetrical pockets, an upside-down coin pocket, mismatched buttons and rivets, incorrectly cut back patches, raw seams, exposed linings and off-register resin prints, Preston shows how these intentional mistakes can add to the design rather than subtract from it.

The capsule is now available for purchase on heronpreston.com and The Levi’s App. Check out the campaign imagery below:
