Looking forward to the must-have bags of 2019.

Men’s fashion is officially obsessed with bags. An untapped category for many years, the everyday accessory has finally shrugged off silly monikers like murse and manbag to be taken seriously. The trend really took off when backpacks were catapulted from schoolboy basic to designer phenomenon with infinite luxury iterations. Then, fanny packs were revived to transcend beyond tourist gear into giant streetwear craze. City sidewalks everywhere have since been overtaken by hypebeasts with belted bags strapped across their torsos.

The latest chapter in the accessories story has been an elevated array of little leather bags. Skewing gender conventions, the Spring 2019 Men’s Collections suggest small statement handbags are on the brink of becoming the next big thing. Some of the most covetable styles have come from Dior Homme’s newly instated artistic director Kim Jones who reimagined the iconic saddle bag for a male audience. His elevated clutch, crossbody, and belt bag encourage men to freely indulge in fashion for fashion’s sake.

Teetering ever closer to women’s wear, the Men’s Collections have almost unanimously turned to sleeker bag silhouettes and tighter straps for the new year. No doubt streetwear stars will continue to surrender to the luxe look of Miuccia Prada’s hit shoulder bags shrunken to the portable shape of a tablet. For a quirkier take, Kenzo has upgraded kitsch plastic lunchboxes with a polished calfskin strap. Over at Versace, Donatella has positioned her opulent crossbody bags as genderless products by draping them on both female and male models.

While it makes business sense to get boys hooked on bags, it also opens up new possibilities for dressing. Many of 2019’s best options aren’t really bags at all, but hybrids between a branded wallet and a necklace. Labels like Fendi, Jacquemus and Valentino have all introduced a modern take on the explorer pouch designed to nonchalantly dangle around the neck. As gender norms shift, these irresistible fashion accessories illuminate the futility of old-school dress codes. Now that men have agency to wear bags, there is no excuse for those overstuffed pockets.
