Having turned 18 on Friday, Jaden Smith used the milestone as a platform for releasing some fresh material—and nod to a new musical avenue he’s navigating. The track, entitled “Labor V2,” was released after a prefacing tweet:

Brought to life in collaboration with Canadian friend and producer The Lab Cook (who is also eighteen), the track is a unique collision of jazz and rap. Though an unlikely pairing of genre, the outcome is incredibly catchy, with Smith putting extra weight into the punchy verses. In closely crafted lyrics, the rapper reflects on his established stance on gender fluidity with lines, “Man these jokers probably think I'm Miley. Confused teen, man, I might be.” He then continues, "In-between innovator and a hypebeast and I know you don’t like me, and it's just 'cause you just like me. I chose not to wear the wife-beater with the Nikes and the white T, now everybody wearing tight jeans."

His personal touch, combined with such interesting musical direction offers an exciting lens into what Jaden has in store for the future—finally as a fully-fledged adult. Listen to the track below.
