After generating a significant amount of hype around his project 4:44, hip-hop mogul Jay-Z has, in turn, delivered a beautifully crafted album comprised of tracks layered with truth and emotion. To coincide with his meaningful lyrics and dynamic beats, a series of three videos have been released for his songs "Bam," "Kill Jay Z" and "Footnotes For 4:44."

“Footnotes” is a series of interview-based videos which explore the meaning behind Jay's lyrics on a rather intimate level. The song "Kill Jay Z" encapsulates the rappers self-inflicted war between his own ego and his own true self. The song, which is the first track on the already certified platinum album, seemingly aims to summarize the themes threaded throughout 4:44 as a whole. Meanwhile, the newly released visual component captures those same themes of evolution, infidelity, love, truth, and legacy in the most palpable of ways. "Cry, Jay Z, we know the pain is real but you can't heal what you never reveal" raps the Tidal magnate.

According to Jay himself,  "Kill Jay Z" is "really about the ego, it’s about killing off the ego so we can have this conversation in a place of vulnerability and honesty, Jay Z, the public persona, couldn’t have this conversation. He has to be eliminated, he has to be moved. So it’s really Shawn Carter speaking to Jay-Z, and he has to convince him to move aside.”

Flawless in execution, the series is successful in simultaneously showcasing Jay's intense introspection as well as capturing his acute vulnerability. Each notably forthright video paints a powerful, conceptually unique portrait that evokes both fascination and an intense level of sentiment in viewers. This project only goes to show that Jay-Z has been and will forever remain an idiosyncratic, unrivalled visionary.

The full-length videos are available for Tidal users exclusively. Check out the previews below.
