Jeff Bezos Wore a Custom Omega Watch On His Flight to Space

All New Shepard crew members wore a Speedmaster Moonwatch to their space adventure.

On Tuesday, billionaire and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos made his first trip to space onboard his Blue Origin rocket ship, New Shepard. This was also the aircraft’s first crewed flight. Bezos was joined by his brother Mark, 82-year-old space race pioneer Wally Funk, and 18-year-old student Oliver Daemen.

The New Shepard flew up to the Kármán line, the imaginary boundary believed to be where space begins, about 62 miles above sea level and peaked at about 66 miles high. During the roughly 10-minute flight, the group was able to get a breathtaking view of Earth, float inside the cabin for about three minutes, and throw around some Skittles in zero-G. Funk became the oldest person to fly into space, while Daemen became the youngest to do so.

But there’s another detail that many might have missed: the entire crew wore custom Omega Watches, specially provided by the label for the flight. Each passenger carried a Speedmaster Moonwatch, also known as the “Speedy” – more specifically, the reference 310.30.42.50.01.001 – on a grey velcro strap with the Blue Origin logo.

The watches were made with a hesalite crystal and the METAS-certified 3861 movement, and each piece had case backs engraved with their respective crew member name.

After the successful flight, which launched from Blue Origin’s Texas base, the capsule parachuted back down to a soft landing, during which Bezos told mission control they had “a very happy crew up here.” Back on the ground, the “space-cowboy” billionaire declared, “Best day ever!”
