Jil Sander Makes Retro Sophisticated for Resort 2023

Creative directors Luke and Lucie Meier explore the sights and styles of a 1960’s California for the latest Jil Sander collection.

Lucie and Luke Meier are California dreamin’ in Jil Sander’s Resort 2023 menswear collection. With inspiration from the laid-back culture of the Golden state in the 1960s, the collection speaks to the  feelings of freedom and spontaneity.

“A new beginning, that’s the idea behind the collection,” the brand said in a statement. “The feeling of 1960s California, freedom, fresh starts, a brand new world, which is what we think many of us want right now.” Those feelings come to life in the collection through elongated lines, ocean gradients, and ambiguous tailoring.

Designed to challenge stereotypes and merge menswear with womenswear, the collection includes deconstructed suits, with stuffy jackets replaced by round neck tank tops and overcoats. Suit pants take new shape as kilts, high-waisted trousers, and shorts.

Expanding upon the ambiguous nature of the collection, sequin tops, hammered silver broches, and cotton smocks evoke the grit and the glamour of old Hollywood. “Stylistically. we mixed the geometric pattern cutting of workwear with the nonconformist glamour of Hollywood and the West Coast,” the brand noted. “We wanted the feeling to be romantic and realistic at the same time, which is typical of that culture and possibly how we need to be today.”

The collection includes playful spins with a variety of materials, from dry wool to linen to cashmere. With split sides and fil-coupé jacquards, the collection is slightly elevated with Jil Sander’s classic look of modernity and sophistication.

Though most of the collection is based in soft neutrals, pastel shades of yellow, pink, and pea green further bring in the ‘60s inspirations. Other iridescent colors of indigo, silver and rose match with the several sequin and printed pieces.

For accessories, a square tote, lunchbox, and cross-body bag all fuse multiple materials, including hard construction elements. Shoes continue the light versus strong motif, with the vulcanized Jil Sander sneaker and the iconic squared sandals and leather sheet boots.

The collection exudes the same energy as the brand’s Spring 2022 show did, with bright, optimistic colors and a general playful attitude. From the colors to the retro-inspired silhouettes, the Resort 2023 collection is perfect for long summer days.
