Justin Bieber Drops “Hold On,” His Second New Single of 2021

With a high octane music video to boot, Bieber continues his hot streak

Justin Bieber has been on a bit of a roll(ercoaster) recently. He has been steadily releasing singles over the past few months, namely “Holy” (with Chance the Rapper), “Lonely” (with Benny Blanco), “Monster” (with Shawn Mendes), and “Anyone.” The singles have received varied critical reception, but have been distinctly more autobiographical for the singer and have all seen a great deal of success, especially down here in North America.

So it’s only natural that he keeps the roll out coming with another new single titled “Hold On.” The song is a message of hope, where Bieber implores the listener to hold on and keep their hopes and dreams alive, knowing that a little more patience and faith can come to fruition. “I need you to hold on, Heaven is a place not too far away” Bieber sings over the chorus. The verse laid with light synths eventually transitions to a punchy chorus where the music drops and the percussion takes over, all layering under Bieber’s vocals.

The single drop also comes with a Colin Tilley-directed music video, and boy does it go places. The video opens with a high speed police chase ala Tokyo Drift with Bieber on a motorcycle, eventually getting shot. It all pans out to reveal that Bieber was being chased after having robbed a bank so that he could get the money to pay for his love interest’s medical bills, played by Tigertail  and “Dave” actress Christine Ko. The video eventually ends on a happier (kind of) note as he’s able to reunite with his ailing love.

Although, sidebar: Justin Bieber pulls up on a motorcycle to a bank, takes off his helmet, goes up to the old lady teller, and gets her to give him money, all while she triggers the silent alarm. And throughout this exchange, Bieber doesn’t even wear a mask to disguise himself (not the COVID kind). If he could spray paint a toy gun to look like a real one, he could’ve worn a mask. But that’s enough overly analytical Mindhunter-ized criminal thinking.

“Hold On,” along with “Anyone,” “Holy,” and “Lonely” will all feature on Bieber’s upcoming sixth studio album, Justice, the follow-up to 2020’s Grammy-nominated Changes. The album is slated to be released on March 19, 2020.
