Everybody expected Kendrick Lamar to perform at halftime of the College Football Playoff National Championship between Alabama and Georgia in Atlanta. That much could be said with certainty. The rest of the details? Question marks, which is common with Kendrick. You always know a statement will be made, but any attempts to predict it are mostly proven to be a waste. And the end product is bigger and bolder than anything anyone could have predicted anyway.

Would the 30-year-old DAMN. rapper, in his performance, directly address President Donald Trump, who was in attendance at the game until halftime? Turns out, Kendrick—who performed at a venue separate (Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park) from where the game was played (Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium)—did not directly acknowledge Trump's existence, but he did make a statement. Lamar wore his new Nike sneaker, the Cortez Kenny I, during the performance. The shoe is crisp white with a black tongue and "DAMN." written on the side in red block letters where a Nike swoosh usually would be.

CORTEZ KENNY I

The Cortez Kenny I is a tribute to Lamar's seven-time Grammy-nominated album DAMN., from which he performed "DNA.," "ELEMENT." and "HUMBLE." at halftime (He closed his performance with new song "All The Stars" featuring SZA from the upcoming Black Panther soundtrack.) The Cortez mold is Nike's longest-standing style since 1968, originating in the West Coast just like Kendrick.

Previously, it had been teased that Kendrick's shoes would hit the general public in correlation with the 60th annual Grammy Awards on Jan. 28, but a post by Nike Sportswear on Instagram last night (Jan. 8) stated that fans can start buying Cortez Kennys via its SNKRS app on Jan. 26.

Lamar also revealed his Nike Kung-Fu Kenny Cortex sneaker (named after his alter ego) in December. According to Highsnobiety, the rumored price is set at $100. Anyone placing bets on how fast they'll sell out?
