For Spring 2020, Philipp Plein pays tribute to his favorite bands. For the past two seasons, Plein has given us relatively quiet presentations in comparison to past seasons, but for this collection the fashion showman was back on top form. Set in a huge venue, the show featured a Mad Max-like set with flamethrowers, monster trucks and motorcycles. A Graffiti backdrop provided the entrance for all of the Philipp Plein SS20 models.

From the offset, the collection paid tribute to Guns N' Roses and Kiss. Axl Rose look-alikes walked the runway, as did the painted faces of Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. “When I was young it was the time of Guns N’ Roses, Blink-182, The Offspring, Green Day, all these rock bands. Back in the day, all the top models wanted to date Axl Rose, today they want to date rap stars. So I wanted to bring it back to rock,” commented Plein to WWD.

The collection featured classic Plein design codes like distressed denim, leather, studs, and streetwear mixed with tailoring. Models wore embroidered crystal masks in skull patterns.

Plein also took on prints. He experimented with text  as patterns, seen in pants, sweaters, hoodies and tees (a nod to the classic band t-shirt). Surprise moments came from pieces in acid green and hot pink. The silhouettes were still evocative of rock, but the vibe felt more like a modern take on Punk. In a crowd of black, steel grey, and denim, the eye-popping color was welcomed and unexpected.

Other standout moments came from studded and python-skin biker jackets and neon sneakers. Additional prints followed with graphic monochrome and a suit dedicated to Kiss.

L.A.-based rock group The Entire Universe performed live, adding to the electric atmosphere. It was part concert, part runway, part Demolition derby. “It’s the biggest party of fashion week, let the party begin," Plein said.
