Just one look at Hernán Cano’s Instagram can tell you that he is not just another pretty face. The model, who made his first foray into the male-modeldom bubble just a few years ago, is observant of the world around him and is helping the more inclusive evolution of fashion reign on. From fronting global fashion campaigns for the likes of Dolce & Gabbana and Emporio Armani to livening up the pages of multiple fashion editorials, Cano is joining the ranks of a new group of rising Spanish faces that are showing the industry why the country is the place to be in.

Spanish V: If you had to pick just one, what singular message do you try to express with your work? What are you trying to tell people?

Hernán Cano: Love is the constant. Everything changes, but if you decide to always keep love, magic happens.

V: What is something that you feel is missing in today’s society?

HC: Knowing that we are all more than enough. Stop judging yourself and realize that the most important thing is to have fun. From joy, comes success.

V: Do you believe that Spain is more popular as a creative destination today than it was five or 10 years ago?

HC: Definitely, yes. I think we are living in a moment in which Spain is in the world’s spotlight. Spanish culture and art have always been very powerful, but I think that the Spanish have always thought that the good is outside and not within the kingdom. In the last few years, I have seen a change in pride and people are realizing how cool we are.

V: How has COVID and the ensuing lockdowns shaped you personally and professionally?

HC: At first, it was very good for me that the world stopped, it helped me reconsider what I like and where I want to go. Although, I feel that I have lost some things along the way and this pandemic is already long—there is too much suffering, and I just hope that people mentally recover from this.

V: What parts of Spanish culture make you feel proud to be a part of it?

HC: What I like the most is seeing how much we love and support each other. The Spanish culture is warm and full of centuries of history, adventures, passion, and romances. I see how everyone’s talents are intertwined and I am excited to know that we will not leave anyone behind—we walk together.

V: What does the future of Spain look like to you? How do you see the country changing and growing in the next few years?

HC: I like to think that Spain is heading toward a version in which all basic human rights are 100 percent respected and fulfilled. Racism and transphobia continue to exist, and it is something that we should not tolerate. I would also like to see nature respected and exalted.

V: How were you discovered as a model? Were you nervous when you first started?

HC: I went to Madrid for a week to party and in one of them, they saw me and I signed with UNO. I was a little nervous, especially because I went from being in my little coastal town to parading in front of Lindsay Lohan in a matter of days.

V: With the modeling industry ever-evolving, what do you see has changed for the better?

HC: I definitely see a lot more representation in the model realm. I want it to be more than just a facade and for the rest of the workers in the industry (makeup artists, stylists, photographers, etc) to be more and more varied and inclusive forever.

V: As the world reopens, what is next for you? What are you most excited for?

HC: I don’t know and I like not knowing, some adventure for sure.

Spanish V: Si tuvieras que elegir solo uno, ¿qué mensaje singular intentas expresar con tu trabajo? ¿Qué intentas decirle a la gente?

Hernán Cano: El amor es la constante. Todo cambia, pero si decides mantener siempre el amor ocurre la magia.

V: ¿Qué es algo que cree que falta en la sociedad actual?

HC: Saber que todos somos más que suficientes. Dejar de juzgarse uno mismo y darse cuenta de que lo más importante es divertirse. From joy comes success.

V: ¿Cree que España es hoy un destino creativo más popular que hace cinco o diez años?

HC: Definitivamente si, creo que estamos viviendo un momento en el cual España esta en el punto de mira mundial. La cultura y el arte español siempre ha sido muy poderoso, pero creo que los españoles siempre han pensado que lo bueno esta fuera y no dentro del reino. En los ultimos años he visto un cambio del orgullo propio y la gente se esta dando cuenta de lo guay que somos.

V: ¿Cómo le ha formado COVID y los consiguientes bloqueos personal y profesionalmente?

HC: Al principio me vino muy bien que el mundo parara, me sirvió para recapacitar sobre lo que me gusta y hacia donde me quiero dirigirme. Aunque siento que he perdido algunas cosas por el camino y esta pandemia ya se me esta haciendo larga, hay demasiado sufrimiento y solo espero que la gente consiga recuperarse mentalmente de esto.

V: ¿Qué partes de la cultura española te hacen sentir orgulloso de formar parte de ella? ¿Hay algo que esté notando sobre la próxima generación de talentos españoles que lo haya emocionado?

HC: Lo que mas me gusta es ver lo mucho que nos queremos y apoyamos entre todos, la cultura española es cálida y esta llena de siglos de historia, aventuras, pasión y romances. Veo como los talentos de todos se van entrelazando y me emociona saber que no dejaremos a nadie atras. Caminamos juntos.

V: ¿Cómo te parece el futuro de España? ¿Cómo ve el país cambiando y creciendo en los próximos años?

HC: Me gusta pensar que españa se dirige hacia una versión en la cual todos los derechos humanos básicos son 100% respetados y cumplidos, sigue existiendo racismo, transfobia… y es algo que no debemos tolerar. También me gustaría ver la naturaleza respetada y exaltada.

V: ¿Cómo te descubrieron como modelo? ¿Estás nervioso cuando empezaste?

HC: Fui a madrid una semana para salir de fiesta y en una de ellas me vieron y firme con UNO. Estaba un poco nervioso sobretodo porque pase de estar en mi pueblito costero a desfilar enfrente de Lindsay Lohan en cuestión de unos días.

V: Con la industria del modelaje en constante evolución, ¿qué cree que ha cambiado para mejor?

HC: Definitivamente veo mucha mas representación en el ámbito modelos. Quiero que sea algo mas que una fachada y que el resto de trabajadores de la industria (maquilladores, estilistas, fotógrafos.. etc) tambien sea cada vez mas variado e inclusivo para siempre.

V: A medida que el mundo se reabre, ¿qué sigue para ti? ¿Qué es por lo que estás más emocionado?

HC: No lo se y me gusta no saberlo, alguna aventura seguro.
