Lil Nas X Wants You to Twerk to “Montero” with the Game “Twerk Hero”

Twerk me by your name

Lil Nas X has been able to turn “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” into a pseudo-cultural phenomenon of sorts. The song has already hit number one on the Billboard charts, sparked a feud with Nike, created a stir in the world of the Conservatives, and is now a video game that goes by the name of “Twerk Hero.”

Made with Unity and Roni Games, “Twerk Hero” is a browser game that has players control an avatar of Lil Nas from the “Montero” music video, wearing the same boxers and thigh high boots he wore in the final segment in hell, with wigs changing with the levels and backgrounds. Each level has the player use the mouse to control Lil Nas’ booty and use it to hit the incoming arrows, which add up to points and stars used to progress. Portions of the song play on loop with the game.

The game sounds odd enough on paper, yes, so I decided to give it a try, dear reader.

It took me one failed attempt to figure out that I was supposed to be using the mouse and not the keyboard to make him twerk. The arrows really just come at you from all four directions in an alarming frequency, getting faster each level. It takes some nimble finger work (or an actual computer mouse) to be able to hit all of them at a reasonable rate. The game does get slightly repetitive as it goes on, with only the changing scenes to help break the monotony. Level 1 starts off with 50 arrows, while level 4 escalates to 327 (that’s where I stopped). I ended up getting a score two-thirds to three-quarters of the way through each time, so don’t blame me for being at least a little proud of myself.

In other news for Lil Nas, his lawsuit with MSCHF against Nike for the Air Max 97 “Satan Shoes” collab has been settled. The details of the settlement have not been revealed, although MSCHF is reportedly happy with the outcome of it and it also includes an option for those having purchased the “Satan Shoes” and “Jesus Shoes” to return the pair for a full refund.

As for “Twerk Hero,” is it one of the weirdest games I’ve ever played? Probably, yes.

Is that surprising? With all that’s been happening since the release of the song, not really.

Would I recommend it? If you’re really into the song…
