Listen to The xx’s Drake-Sampling New Song

The xx creates art using art.

The xx are absolute pros at integrating samples of other artists’ tracks into their music (or providing samples for artists, like Rihanna, to lay vocals on) in a seamless way that doesn’t detract from their smooth and calm nature. On one of the new, officially released outtakes from their recent album I See You, entitled “Naive,” they do it all over again—with a Drake song this time around.

“Naive” samples one of the hooks from Take Care deep cut “Doing It Wrong,” with Drake’s notable vocal in the intro, before embedding it into the song’s melancholic production like a haunting refrain. Although Romy Croft and Oliver Sim’s warm and affecting vocals inevitably take over, the “wrong thing” sample acts as a hidden gem underneath the melodic guitar and sweet piano, silently recurring as a pressing reminder.

Despite being left off the main record, "Naive" proves itself to be a rewarding and essential as ever, more than reaching the minimalist heights of the band's previous output. Listen below.
