The last couple of years in the men's grooming game have given us a host of new, unorthodox ingredients. Sea kelp, bourbon, and algae saw growing popularity, but charcoal's detoxifying effects and gritty-all black texture made it a clear standout when it comes to health benefits. But as it turns out, responsibly-sourced charcoal is actually edible, and offers powerful purifying effects including the absorption of toxins, pesticides, and heavy metals from your body. And the best way to consume it may just be to replace your favorite beans as a cheeky riff  with some charcoal capsules, a cheeky riff on the caffeine snob's obsession with black coffee.

Sure, the charcoal latte is starting to pop up at artisanal pour-over shops everywhere, but making your own at home is actually a pretty simple ordeal once you make a trip to your local health food shop to pick up the main ingredient: coconut palm-based charcoal capsules. Here's all you need to know to pour up your own blacked-out home brew:

Ingredients

  • 250ml milk (almond, coconut or soka)
  • 2 capsules of coconut palm-based charcoal (available in organic shops and pharmacies)
  • Cocoa powder
  • 1tsp honey or agave syrup

Just pour your hot milk over the charcoal capsules and add a dash of cocoa to decorate. Add the honey or agave syrup to sweeten. And if you're still looking for your caffeine fix, a shot of strong espresso is a welcome add-on.
