Francesco Risso, the current head and visionary of Marni, presented his FW18 Menswear collection in Milan, creating an eccentric, absurd atmosphere that his playful, nostalgically youthful designs could live in. His parade of oversized everything, styled onto models ranging in many ages, feels like an ‘out of the trunk’ dress-up game — a game where there are no rules and no style boundaries.

Risso’s attention to detail, specifically in the textures and patterns he chooses to layer over one another, stands out most in this collection, like the pairing of uniquely colored plaid trousers underneath patchwork coats and the comical inclusion of screen-printed suits (including one with cartoon monkeys and chairs), as well as two models draped in oversized colorful blankets. His use of a vintage, yet not necessarily thrifty, hue of rainbow throughout the collection feels fresh and modern without needing any extra saturation or filter. This collection is secure in its story and identity.

It’s as if Risso is challenging the audience to simply enjoy the garments and to take joy in observing and finding a personal connection to his bohemia. Whether it’s within a childhood memory or pure visual stimulation, this collection lands in the sweetest of spots, and Francesco Risso and Marni are artistically thriving.
