Martin Johnson is back and he's got a hit on his hands. The Boys Like Girls frontman just dropped a brand new track titled "Bad Girls Don't Cry" as a part of his new solo project, The Night Game. Johnson's debut album, which comes out this summer, will feature artists like Kirin J. Callinan and Gotye, and channel the same pop songwriting energy that led the artist to working with Taylor Swift and John Mayer throughout his career.

Johnson detailed the song's creative journey for VMAN, stating, "Towards the start of making this album I was playing a lot of poker. I made the trek to the desert for what was supposed to be a Friday/Saturday night trip and ended up staying until the following Thursday morning. I’ve since quit smoking, but at the time I found myself doing countless solo laps around the casino, chain-smoking and looking for answers on the half-finished album I was avoiding back in Los Angeles. Looking for a sign in the flop and on the river. I don’t drink anymore but there’s something lodged deep in my DNA that’s always looking for trouble."

"The only thing fake about her was her name," he continued. "The was the adrenaline I came for and she fascinated me. She had a job she wasn’t particularly proud of and a past she didn’t like talking about. She looked familiar — it took me a minute in the low light to place where I knew her from but when it clicked, it all clicked. Right: she made some movies in the valley, just enough to fund some real estate classes and pay the rent. She knew when you knew, and if she cared she’d never let on. I’ve never been one for the whitewashed past or white lies of a saint. I’ve always preferred the honest outlaw, and she was very much both of those. She had a survivalist mentality, a determination to change the hand she was dealt and get out of Las Vegas. When I asked about her past she looked me in the eye and said, 'bad girls don’t cry.'"

"I got in the car and drove home to finish the album. It excites me to get this song out into the world because when played live it charges me with that bit of extra nitrous for the rest of the set — just like she did. Looking forward to hopping back in the van with the boys and playing it out on the road next month. And wherever she is I owe her one. Part of me hopes she got her brokers license and got out, but then I think of her at the sign in sheet of some open house in Calabasas and hope even harder she stayed wild and wakes up when the neon goes on.”

His North American tour kicks off on March 17 in Seattle and runs through June 17, when Johnson and a full band will perform at Firefly Festival. Everything you loved about Boys Like Girls is totally elevated in this debut single, featuring his strong gritty vocals and an even stronger hook. Martin Johnson's talent and experience in songwriting come through in every verse of "Bad Girls Don't Cry" — truly, it has the makings of a radio pop hit. Listen to the full track below, and look out for The Night Game's debut album this summer.
