Matthew M. Williams is the New Creative Director of Givenchy

The founder of 1017 Alyx 9SM will be replacing former creative director, Clare Waight Keller.

Givenchy has officially appointed Matthew M. Williams, designer behind the streetwear-inspired label 1017 Alyx 9SM, as its new creative director. Williams will be succeeding British designer Clare Waight Keller, who announced her departure in April after three years at the French fashion house. 

“I am extremely honored to join the House of Givenchy,” Williams said in a statement. “The Maison’s unique position and timeless aura make it an undeniable icon and I am looking forward to working together with its ateliers and teams, to move it into a new era, based on modernity and inclusivity.” 

Williams is a self-taught designer who founded 1017 Alyx 9SM — also known as Alyx — in 2015. The Chicago-born talent initially got his start in music by collaborating with well-renowned artists, including Kanye West and Lady Gaga. The cult label classifies itself as a brand that seeks “to unite technical innovation with human emotion.” With its modern techniques and constructive silhouettes, Alyx exudes functionality within its men’s and womenswear collections, especially with the brand’s trademark “rollercoaster buckle.” 

“I am convinced that, with his unapologetic approach to design and creativity and in great collaboration with the Maison’s exceptional ateliers and teams, Matthew will help Givenchy reach its full potential,” said Renaud de Lesquen, CEO and President of Givenchy, in a statement

Williams will be presenting his first collection for Givenchy this October in Paris.
