CONTENDER #2: SHADE

"I'm a small town Kentucky boy. I've never really been anywhere!" says Shade after getting #ShotByKlein for the VMAN/Ford Model Search. The photo shoot actually marked the first time he had ever visited New York, and while Shade has mastered that down home country charm (he politely referred to this interviewer as "ma'am"), he's ready to embrace life in the big city. "New York is fantastic. I could get used to it," he insists. Here, the male model hopeful talks leaving his job at Buffalo Wild Wings, getting starstruck by Steven Klein, and the American Dream.

Why do you want to be a model?

SHADE I really didn’t have much growing up. Everybody said that I should try it out so I applied [for the model search] one day and I didn’t really hear anything back so I didn’t get my hopes up. And then, out of nowhere, they called me and said, “Hey, you’re going to New York tomorrow.”

What do you do now?

S I worked at Buffalo Wild Wings in Richmond, Kentucky for a while, but this thing sort of went off and it didn’t really work with my schedule, so I’m unemployed there now. So I’m just trying to pursue a modeling career.

What would be your ideal modeling job?

My ideal modeling job…um, well, I guess I’d love to travel and have photo shoots in Paris and France and Scotland and all that stuff. So just one that would allow me to live the dream—the American Dream. Who wouldn’t want to do that, right?

What was it like being shot by Steven Klein?

Oh my God! When I saw him I got sorta starstruck. My jaw dropped and everything. I mean, kids like me, you never really expect to shake Steven Klein’s hand or look at him in person. It’s a huge blessing that I have this opportunity.

What would you sacrifice to be a top male model?

I would sacrifice anything. Anything and everything. All my time. I’d pursue it with so much ambition. I’d strive for it.

What’s the biggest draw of the modeling life?

The fact that I would be able to be the face of [a brand]. When I was a kid, I would always look up to people who are where I am right now, who made it out of the little towns and went to a big city. Kids who came up from nothing, those stories. I wouldn’t even care about all the parties or money or anything. I just want to let people know that it’s possible.
