Men’s Skirts Are Having Their Moment

Take a look at our favorite men’s skirts this year.

Historically, men and skirts go way back. From pleated Egyptian kilts dating ca. 2.250 B.C. to doublet and diverted skirt with codpiece worn by notorious Henry VIII. In popular culture just think about the golden era of Axl Rose or kilts of Jonathan Davis from Korn! Or, our fashion-wise father of prêt-a-porter men’s skirts, our favorite enfant terrible of French fashion: Jean-Paul Gaultier.  Let’s also not forget genius skirt hybrids from the brilliant mind of Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons. Men’s skirts are very much connected with rebellious movements in culture led by music phenomena such as punk & grunge. It’s no wonder we often witness skirts on the runway but for next spring-summer, it seems they are the predominant trend next to “short shorts”.

From fashion legends such as Riccardo Tisci for Burberry and Hedi Slimane for Celine, to new vanguard led by Spencer Phipps for Phipps and JW Anderson for Loewe; skirts — or at least designer versions of them — are everywhere. While Phipps is defiantly referencing Axl Rose’s iconic stylings, America’s best Thom Browne continues promoting the perfect preppy suit paired with a pleated skirt. Grandmaster of asymmetry, Yohji Yamamoto, is proposing his own vision of sublime deconstruction while Silvia Venturini Fendi is merging the perfectly crisp shirt into a skirt or dress.

Skirts in menswear are not just about being trendy. They represent the attitude and subliminal fight against still-present boring conventions when it comes to the menswear world. If you don’t care so much about the political subtext of skirts, then think about the ultimate idea of comfort that skirts bring. Maybe you should try visiting your local grocery store dressed in a skirt with a cool hoodie and your favorite pair of sneakers. It’s liberating!
