Microgrant Applications Opening Soon for Trans Youth

Trans Lifeline will award 20 microgrants a month to trans young-adults in need.

20 microgrants a month will be awarded to transgender and non-binary young-adults in need starting in July, according to Trans Lifeline.

These small grants are partially aimed to support transgender and non-binary young-adults as they work through legal name changes. Trans Lifeline is also offering professional guidance to help grant-receivers navigate legal language and paperwork.

To qualify for the microgrant program, applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 29.
The program guarantees recipients funding for court order name changes, passports, drivers licenses and more. Despite this, the organization will not be able provide assistance for birth certificates, housing or medical costs.

The organization is the only service in the United States where every hotline operator is transgender. Since their microgrant program’s founding in 2016, Trans Lifeline has awarded over $500,000 to transgender people in need. Each cycle, the non-profit organization designates 75% of its financial aid to “TBIPOC” or transgender Black, Indigenous, and people of color.

Last year, the Trans Lifeline launched the Inside Advocacy project which provides funds for transgender people who are currently incarcerated or recently discharged. Grants provided to these individuals aim to help them re-enter society and navigate legal identification changes.
