It’s a sad moment in musical history as Migos rapper Takeoff (Kirshnik Khari Ball) has been pronounced dead –at 28 years old–after being shot earlier this morning at the 810 Billiards & Bowling alley located in Houston. The incident occurred around 2:30 am, during the time he and Quavo were playing dice alongside 40-50 other people, when an altercation broke out in which someone opened fire, killing Takeoff and injuring two others. Quavo remains unharmed. The death of Takeoff marks yet another young high-profile rapper’s life taken too early, sparking the conversation of “When does this stop?”

Born in Lawrenceville, Georgia, in 1994 and best remembered as a member of the rap trio, Migos alongside his uncle Quavo and cousin Offset, Takeoff is responsible for collaborating on some of the most notable hip-hop song debuts in history. After locking in their signature beat on “Versace,” Migos only flourished, receiving multiple Grammy nominations for their sophomore album, Culture. Alongside a string of smash hits including “Bad and Boujee,” “Stir Fry,” and “Motorsport,” all of which have topped the Billboard Hot 100. Most recently, Quavo and Takeoff dropped “Unc & Phew” as a duo, followed by their music video for “Messy.”
The death of Takeoff has elicited a flood of response from the hip-hop community, as friends and fans of the rapper took to Twitter to share their condolences.
I remember @1YoungTakeoff being a very down to earth, cool dude. Cant believe I’m having to say this again about another young black star being killed for no reason, something really has to change in the industry, it’s sickening how easy & often people are dying. He was 28. Takeoff, the then-kid who convinced his uncle (Quavo) to start rapping then helped change the flow of rap. The undisputed best rapper in Migos (his uncle told me so himself just a few months ago). What a loss.

I was in college when Biggie and ‘Pac were killed and thought there was no way we’d ever experience anything remotely close to that again. Now it’s happening so frequently that you barely have time to recover before someone else killed. RIP Takeoff.
